This painting is a version of a composition Deutsch painted several times: eight men of different ages and from different regions - some from the north of Egypt, others from Nubia or Sudan - who are gathered in a circle outside a coffee shop in Cairo. Pipes ✱in hand, they listen as a member of their group reads them an important message or edict, while a large pot of freshly ဣbrewed coffee stands at the ready on a stove in the window.
