Jade fittings of this form have been excavated from various Liangzhu Culture sites, such as one discovered from tomb no. 77 at Zhaolingshan, Kunshan, Jiangsu province, now in the Nanjing Museum, published in Gu Fang, The Complete Collection of Unearthed Jades in China, vol. 7, Beijing, 2005, pl. 23; as well as a group, varying in design, excavated from several locations in southern China, illustrated in Yang Boda, ed., Zhongguo yuqi quanji [Complete collection of Chinese jades], vol.𒈔 1, Shijiazhuang, 2005, nos. 261-264 and 266-271.

The function of this type of fittings from the Liangzhu Culture, however, long remained a mystery until the very end of the last millennium, when a related jade fitting was discovered attached to the end of an ivory comb as a handle, in a tomb in Zhoujiabang, Haiyan, Zhejiang province in 1999; see the exhibition catalogue Liangzhu yu zhongguo gudai. yuqi xianshide wuqiannian wenming [Liangzhu and ancient China. The 5000 years of jade civilization], Beijing, 2019, p. 112, where it is also noted that these comb handles have been exclusively found in the tombs of aristocrats, and each tomb only contains one handle, which are 🅺;always positioned near the head of the buried person, p. 113.
