Dr. Marie Riemann-Reyher has, on the basis of photographs, confirmed the attribution to Menzel in written correspondence to the current owner. Dr Riemann-Reyher suggests that this landscape may have been executed in the 1870s or early 1880s, on one of the artist's trips to Southern Germany, observing that 🤡the dark areas of this comꦰposition are most probably drawn with carpenter's lead, a material in which almost all of Menzel's later drawings are executed. Dr Riemann-Reyher also notes that the signature is stylistically comparable with other signed works by the artist.
Landscapes like this are rare in Menzel's work.
