Although the previous attribution to Adam Elsheimer is untenable, tꦍhis intriguing and highly unusual drawing does seem to originate from the early 17th century Roman expatriate milieu in which Elsheimer𒁏 worked, alongside Dutch contemporaries such as the Pynas brothers, and Leonard Bramer.
The subject also eludes definitiveꦏ identification, but Elizabeth 𒈔McGrath and Paul Taylor of the Warburg Institute have kindly told us that they believe it to be an allegory, rather than a specific myth.
