A RARE PAIR OF CHINESE EXPORT FIGURES OF RECUܫMBENT PIEBALD HORSES, QING DYNASTY, QIANLONG PERIOD, 1770-1780
each modeled with one front leg outstretched and the other bentဣ below the body, decorated allover with splashes of black enamel to simulate the piebaldཧ coat

Compare a closely related example of the same rare model but with iron-red coat, formerly in the Collection of Mildred R. and Rafi Y. Mottahdeh, and illustrated in David Howard and John Ayers, China for the West, London, 1978, vol. II, cat. No. 625, and later sold in these rooms, October 19th, 2000, lot 389. Another example, also with an iron-red coat, was first sold in these rooms, May 25th, 1971, lot 137, and again on May 16th, 1975, lot 234. A further pair of white glazed horses in the same model, formerly in the Ionides Collection, was sold in our London rooms, July 2nd,1963, lot 31. It ✃is interesting to note that the present examples from which were made the actual original models of the popular Mottahedeh reproductions, seen in the Nelson Rockefeller Collection Inc., catalogue number 36.
