A CONTINENTAL ROCK 🌸CRYꦑSTAL CUP MOUNTED IN GOLD AND ENAMEL
THE BOWL POSSIBLY 16TH CENTURY
the oviform bowl carv🧔ed in intaglio with tritons combating sea monsters, the back carved in relief with the webbed feet and ridged back of a dragon whose neck and head rise over the interior of the bowl, the baluster rock crystal stem carved with interlaced tendrils, the oval rock crystal foot carved with spreading foliage, the gold mounts with champlevé black enamel scrolling foliage spaced by turquoise enamel flowerheads

The carving is based on Italian examples of the 3rd quarter of the 16th century. See a rock crystal nef attributed to Milan in the catalogue Les Gemmes de la Couronne, Département des Objets d’Art, Louvre, item 113 p. 262.
The marine theme carving of the rock crystal relates to that on a cup with mounts attributed to Reinhold Vasters at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, illustrated and discussed by Dr. Yvonne Hackenbroch, in Metropolitan Museum Journal, 1986, fig. 140, 141 p. 230.
