Description
A Roman Marble Torso of a Charis
circa 1st Century A.D.
from a group of the Three Graces, standing with the weight on her right leg, traces of a strut on her right hip, remains of the left arm of a Grace standing to her left on the breast and right shoulder; no restorations.
Height 35 cm.

The composition of the Three Graces linked together in a dance-like pose enjoyed great popularity in antiquity and is known from a variety of media, e.g. marble reliefs (sarcophagus in Hever Castle: ), bronze reliefs (mirror in New York: ), wall paintings (fresco from Po♌mpeii: ), and marble statuary (a group in New York: ). The original must have been created in the Hellenistic period and could have been a painting.
