MONET ON THE VERGE OF COMPLETING HISꦦ CAMPAIGN TO SECURE FOR FRANCE MANET'S PROVOCATIVE MASTERPIECE, OLYMPIA. Manet's portrait of a naked prostitute caused a scandal when first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1865, but it was a major influence on the Impressionists and within decades it had become an acknowledged masterpiece. Monet spearheaded the campaign to raise 20,000 Francs to acquire the painting for the nation. Henri Guérard (1846-97), who subscribed 200 Francs, had been a friend of Manet.
