Description
Paolo Mascagni
Anatomia universale... rappresentata con tavole in rame... per Antonio Serantoni. Florence: V. Batelli e figli, 1833
2 volumes (one text and one atlas), folio (455 x 300mm.), 75 plates each in two states facing each other, one black and white and one hand-coloured, with tissue guards between each pair of plates, contemporary green half morocco over marbled boards, flat spines gilt, text volume: paper repair in gutter of first two leaves, pp.161-164 coming loose, last two leaves repaired at fore-edge; both volumes: occasional light foxing (heavier at end of text volume), bindings rubbed
Mascagni's masterpiece of anatomy was first printed posthumously in 1823-32, with magnificent plates by Antonio Serantoni; it was acknowledged that its large format made it difficult to use so Seratoni reworked the plates for this smaller format edition. The plates appear in pairs, with the black and white version containing the technical information, and the coloure🐎d one depicting the anatomy using red and blu🐟e to represent blood flow. Mascagni's greatest contribution to medicine was his research on the lymphatic system.
