The Revenue Act of 1767, one of the Townshend Acts, was passed by Parliament after the repeal of the Stamp Act to raise revenue at the expense of the colonie🦋s. It levied significant import duties on such common items as glass, lead, painters colors, paper, and tea. It gave customs officials broad authority to enforce the taxes and punish smugglers through the use of "writs of assistance," i.e., general warrants that could be used to search private property for smuggled goods. The Act was repealed in 1770, but the duties on tea remained.
