Marchesa Poli,

Estate sale, New Haven, 1977

The Roman artist Giovanni Battista Busiri focused, primarily, on landscapes and vedute, with the present work, depicting the ruins of&n🌄bsp;the Tomb of Cecil𓆏ia Metella, a particularly accomplished example in gouache.

The Tomb of Cecilia Metella is located in the outskirts of Rome, at the three mile marker on the Via Appia, and was a location that Busiri incorporated into his painted and drawn work with some frequency.1
