The half-mammal half-fish mythical sea monster Makara is usually depicted with bulging eyes and mouth agape baring teeth. It is a symbol of darkness: opposite to Kala, the sun element. Both Kala and Makara designs were common on Javanese temples in the Early Classic pe🐈riod.
