A cloisonné enamel vase

Seal mark of Kumeno (Kumeno Teitaro, 1865-1939)

Meiji period, late 19th century


the vase tapering towards the foot and slightly everted neck, silver mounts, decorated in coloured enamels and worked in various thicknesses of silver wire, with a vivid ho-o bird hovering above purple flowers

25 cm., 9¾ in. high

Kumeno Teitaro (1861-1939) was well-known for his ginbari enamels. He opened his own studio in 1882 and exhibited at many national and international exhibitions including Nuremberg 1885, Paris 1889 (where he was awarded a silver medal) and Chicago 1893. At St Louis 1904 he was awarded a ‘grand prize’ and a gold medal at Liège in 1905.
