A pair of large cloisonné enamel vases and covers
Meiji period, late 19th century
the large oviform vases with domed covers and copper-gilt mount༺s, knop finials, decorated in coloured cloisonné enamels and worked in various thicknesses of gold and copper wire, with two shaped panels containing a scene of hawk, swallows, finches and hens amongst chrysanthemum, lilies, peonies and wisteria vine to one, the other with long-tailed pheasants, quails, and further finches and hens beside similar foliage and morning glory, the reverse with a large flock of red-capped cranes among hydrangea, peony and bamboo beside a meandering stream, the panels interspersed with genre scenes of Heian courtiers engaging in humorous past-times, the neck with geometric floral design, the domed ᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚ𒀱ᩚᩚᩚcovers with roundels of mythical creatures, butterflies above foliate scrolls, the spherical finials with further geometric floral patterns
