Ghubara Meteorite With Cut And Polished Face
L5
Jiddat al Harasis, Oman
109 x 111 x 119mm (4.25♏ x 4.33 x 4.66 in.) and 3,053 grams (6.75 lbꦦs.)
Ghubara was the🌳 first meteorite discovered in🎃 Oman, whose deserts are perhaps the most meteorite-peppered dry deserts in the world. (Oman is not struck with greater frequency, it’s just that meteorites are easier to find on its desert pavement.)
Ghubara is a xenolithic meteorite, which implies the meteorite itself is peppered with foreign particles. Milky xenolithic clasts are much in evidence and completely unrelated to the host material’s ebony𓆉 matrix. Some of these clasts are remnants of enstatite meteorites which formed long before the host rock. The cut face reveals bright flecks of metal which are suspended throughout the meteorite. With a desert varnish exterior (the result of being sandblasted in the desert for untold years, this is an uncommon example of a meteorite comprised of two distinctly different materials — both extraterrestrial — that combined billions of years ago following an impact in interplanetary space.
