These delicate trompe l'œil compositions, showing Charity and Venus surrounded by children and putti, are exemplary of the work of Flemish artist Marten Jozef Geeraerts. Geeraerts and his contemporary, Jacob de Wit, were the leading exponents of grisaille trompe l'œil painting in eighteenth-century Holland and Flanders. Works such as these were especially popular as decoration in palaces and the grand residences of noble families.
