A member of the Bristol School, Edward Villiers Rippingille was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy. In 1824, he exhibited his most famous work, The Stage Coach Breakfast (National Trust, Clevedon Court, North Somerset), which includes portraits of leading literary figures William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, among others.1 Here, the artist paints a playful scene of men, women and children enjoying each other's company in Ranelagh Gardens, the p🌺ublic pleasure grounds located on a site just east of t꧃he Royal Hospital in Chelsea.
