The battleship Lepanto was built for the Italian Royal Navy and was launched in Livorno on 17 March 1883. Francesco Gioli records the event in this lively oil sketch, which he presumably painted in situ. The inscription in Italian, lower right, translates as follows: 'Swiftly from the deserted slipway / into a tumultuous sea / the ship launches'.
