From his first official experiences with the Sierra Club in 1919 through his final year as a board member in 1971, Ansel Adams participated in the Sierra Club Outings. During these excursions he fostered many friendships, particularly with William E. Colby, who had joined the Sierra Club in 1898 and served as its secretary for over 40 years. Colby created the new position of official photographer for Adams in 1928. Adams included a portrait of Colby in his portfolio The Sierra Club Outing, 1929. Of Colby, Adams wrote, ‘You know who he was without inquiry – he comes with him a deep humanity, and the mood of rivers and fo⛦rests and clean white stone.’
