Brown was born in Nottingham and although he trained at the Bushey School of Art and lived in St Ives and Haddiscoe in Norfolk, his connections with Notttingham were strong and his loyalties always lay with the local cricket team. The present picture depicts the excitement as news is announced of the latest result of the 3-day County Championship match at Trent Bridge between the League champions Surrey and Nottingham, played during the bank-holiday of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd August 1892. Scurrying newspaper-vendors are selling the latest edition 'hot off the press' to the interested parties who have gathered on a pavement to hear the score. Middlesex were beaten by eight wickets and Nottingham were victorious - presumably Brown would not have painted the scene if the result had been different.
