Description
Rowling, J.K.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. New York: Scholastic Press, 1998
8vo. Inscribed by Rowling on verso of half-title. Original half red cloth over purple boards with embossed diamond pattern, spine gilt-lettered; minor wear to spine ends. Original pictorial dust-jacket, early printing with "$16.95" on the dust-jಌacket, and no numeral on the spine; minor wrinkling to head and tail of spine panel and corners.
First American edition, presentation copy, inscribed "To Skylar— I might steal your name for a very cool character in a future book! JK Rowling."
The present copy was inscribed to the recipient while attending Rowling's first radio appearance in the United States (All Things Considered, NPR Radio, 3 December 1998). In fact, Rowling's 1998 visit was her first to the U.S. During this NPR radio event, children were brought to the studio, and participated in the interview. A then 8-year-old Skylar asked Rowling: "How did you get the idea of writing about magic?" Rowling responded: "When I was younger, I think my greatest fantasy would have been to find out that I had powers that I'd never dreamt of—that I was special. That these people couldn't be my parents, I'm far more interesting than that! I think a lot of children secretly might think that sometimes. So, um, I just took that one stage further, and I thought what's the best way of breaking free of that? OK, y🔴ou're magic."
A lovely copy of a modern classic, with a charming—and now rare—presentation inscription.
