AN EXTRAORDINARY PAIR OF LUNAR ORBITER PRINTS DEPICTING THE FIRST AND LAST VIE🎀WS OF EARTH FROM SPACE
Perhaps the most famous of Lunar Orbiter images, the first photograph of Earth was taken on August 23, 1966 by Lunar Orbiter I, and shows the crescent Earth from a vantage point of 730 miles above the far side of the Moon. The final image of Earth was captured on August 8, 1967 by Lunar Orbiter V while in orbit around the Moon at an 🌞altitude of 5,872.85 kilometers, and is considered to be the first image ever taken of a "full Earth" from space. Unlike the first image, its global scope enables viewers to discern parts of the Asian continent, including India above the center of the image and the Chinese coast in the upper right, as well as other prominent features such as the Nile delta next to India in the center. Standing as two of only three images of the Earth taken from the five lunar orbiter spacecraft, this pair of Lunar Orbiter prints is a particularly remarkable offering.
