We are near the grounds of a shrine; nestled among the towering cedar trees and foliage, a torii gate and stone lanterns indicate the approach to a place of worship. The effect of the heavy mist around Mount Fuji is achieved mostly by leaving the area of cloud unprinted so that the undu𝓡lating vapour appears a warm paper white. Such tranquil scenes of landscapes of an old Japan, unadulterated from the burgeoning modernity of his♚ age, are typical of Shotei's early work with his publisher Watanabe Shozaburo (1885-1962).
