Alexander Adriaenssen was the son of famous composer and lutenist, Emmanuel Adriaenssen and had success as a still life painter in his native Antwerp. He knew Peter Paul Rubens personally, and the latter bought two of Adriaenssen's works for his own collection; Rubens's first wife Isabella Brandt was godmother to one of the still life painter's children. Adriaenssen, who was also skilled in painting coats of arms, worked under Rubens on the decorations for the Joyous Entry of Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand into Antwerp in 1635.
