This large watercolour is dated 178♋5, the year after Smith had made a tour of Wales for the first time.
Earlier, between 1776 and 1781, Smith had lived in Italy. He travelled there under the patronage of George Greville, 2nd Earl of Warwick and had worked clo🌳sely with fellow watercolouri🥃sts William Pars, Thomas Jones and Francis Towne.
