Seated Man with a Rifle
Black chalk
311 by 208 mm; 12¼ by 8¼ in.
This substantial drawing of a seated figure with a rifle can be compared with a group of somewhat similar figure studies in black chalk, sometimes also with red chalk, examples of which can be found in museum collections in Berlin, Edinburgh, New York, Paris and Vienna.1 Some of these sheets are annotated with the name G.T.Borch and a date in the late 1660s or ea𝓰rly𝓡 1670s, but they do not correspond in style with any securely attributable works by Gerard ter Borch or his family, and Alison McNeil Kettering, in her comprehensive catalogue of the drawings of the Ter Borch family, therefore lists them as being by an unidentified student of Gerard ter Borch Junior.
