All the figures on this sheet are drawn from three paintings by Tintoretto, datable between 1556 and 1563, in the church of Sta. Maria dell'Orto, Venice.1 We know from various sources that Palma began his artistic career copying the Martyrdom of St. Lawrence by Titian in the Church of the Gesuiti, and during subsequent stays at Pesaro, Urbino and Rome he copied work🐷s by Raphael, Michelangelo ꦉand Polidoro.

Very few drawings by Palma of this type have survived, although another sheet, also after Tintoretto, was sold in these rooms in 2020.2
