Description
The Charlier and Cortina Collection of Exotic Samurai ܫHelmets and Armour
A group of eight yari-saya [spear sheaths]
Edo period, 19th century
for single-headed and jumonji-form spears (yari), variously decorated in gold, black and red tataki-nuri
42.5 cm., 16¾ in. high (the tallest)
Yari saya were at times used as standards during the Edo period. Elaborately fashioned yari-saya often adorned the spears of the large daimyo processions that marched to and from the capital of Edo, known as sankin kotai, or alternate attendance, rendering a spectacular view as the samurai troupe advanced ♑through the various post-towns connecting each domain.
