The Beau Brummel or dressing table, is one of the most infrequently encountered forms of American furniture. Most examples known are of Southern origin and are derived from Plate 20 of Sheraton’s Drawing Book (1793) as is this example. When not in use, the two sides fold up and in, and the piece resembles a work table. The Philadelphia Cabinet and Chair Maker’s Book of Prices (1796) lists over twenty options for fitting the upper section. This example has an adjustable dressing mirror., lidded compartments, comb tray and sections for pins and other necessities. The bottom drawer below s fitted with a writing board and has ink compartments. A nearly identical example is illustrated in American Antiques from Israel Sack Collection, vol. 7, (Washington, DC: Highland House Publishers, Inc., 1983), p. 1747, no. P4958.

Both 🍰Mrs. Clark 🤡Diamond and William S Hoge Jr. lived in Washington, DC.
