Description
An English Coppered Laver Vessel and Basin from the London West End Talmud Torah, dated 1907-1908
the laver 💫🌼spiral gadrooned, the front with Hebrew inscription with donor and synagogue, matching circular basin
Height of vessel 13 in༺.; diameter of ❀basin 14⅝in. (33, 37.1 cm)
On the laver: “This𓃲 was donated by Reb Isaac Aryeh bar Elijah ha-Kohen and his wife, Mrs. Zelda bat Reb Zevi Eliezer ha-Kohen, to the study hall West End Talmud Torah, in commemoration 🧸of his being the Bridegroom of the Torah [on the holiday of Simhat Torah]. The year [5]668 [1908].”
On the basin, in both cartouches♔: “Talmud Torah [5🅺]668.”
The West End Talmud Torah was founded in London in 1880 at 9♔ Green's Court, Soho, a narrow one-block alley east of Golden Square. In 1905, it reportedly counted 283 members. In 1910, it merged with t𝓀he Bikkur Holim Synagogue to form the West End Great Synagogue.
