Description

An Unusual Pair of Parcel-Gilt Silver and Filigree Deer-Head Torah Finials from the Sassoon Collection, probably Indian, early 19th century

f🍨ormed as deer heads, with pendant bell "earrings", rising on filigree necks from gilt floral-chased collars, apparently unmarked

Height 4⅜in. (12 cm)

Possibly Reuben David Sassoon (1834-1905), to his great-niece and sister-in-law
Flora Gubbay, Mrs. Solomon David Sassoon (1856-1936), to her son
David Solomon Sassoon (1880-1942), to his son
Rabbi Solomon David Sassoon of Letchworth (1915-1985), and by descent until sold
Sotheby's Tel Aviv, 9 April 1999, lot 27
Possibly London, 1887: Anglo-Jewish Historical Exhibition, Royal Albert Hall, "The Sassoon Collection of Hebrew Ecclesiastical Art, exhibited by Reuben D. Sassoon Esq.", as part of the ornaments of scroll 2043, "fitted with curious silver bells and pointer (Indian workmanship)".

London, 1906: Exhibition of Jewish Art and Antiquities, Whitechapel Art Gallery, November 7 to December 16, no. 161 "Pair of Bells from Scrꦯoll of the Law; silver-gilt; stags' heads," lent by Mrs. S.D. Sassoon.

When these pieces were🌼 sold in 1999 it was noted that "according to family tradition, these decorative finials were used as Torah Finials;" the angled bases could have been fitted to the domed top of a tik.

Thes꧃e pieces were definitely in the collection of Flora Gubbay Sassoon, who loaned them in 1906 to the Whitechapel exhibition of Judaica. They may have formed part of the extensive Judaica collection that she had recently inherited from her uncle and brother-in-law, Reuben David Sassoon (died 1905), or they may have belonged to her separately, from before her arrival in England from India.
