Description
Carl Ludwig Willdenow and Friedrich Gottlieb💧 Hayne
Abbildung der deutschen Holzarten für Forstmänner und Liebhaber der Botanik, herausgegeben von Friedrich Guimpel. Berlin: In der Schüppelschen Buchhandlung, 1815
FIRST EDITION, 2 volumes, 4to (260 x 205mm), dedication, 216 hand-coloured engraved plates, contemporary half calf, red edges, binding rubbed, labels chipped
A BEAUTIFULLY PRODUCED WORK ON GERMAN TREES. Willdenow, curator of the Berlin Botanical Garden, developed the garden from modest beginnings into one of the most comprehensive in Europe. The present work is most probably his rarest, and was absent from both the Plesch and De Belder collections. The fine plates are after drawings by Friederich Guimpel, a famous botanical artist illustrating among others Hayne's extensive work on medical plants൩.
