Description

Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin

Stapeliarum in hortis vindobonensibus cultarum descriptiones figuris coloratis illustratae. Vienna: Wappler and Beck, 1806-[1819]

FIRST EDITION, folio (455 x 320mm.), 64 hand-coloured engraved plates, contemporary mottled calf with green morocco spine, spine slightly worn at head

THE RAREST OF JACQUIN’S FOLIO PUBLICATIONS, this work on the stapeliae, native to South Africa, was completed by Jacquin’s son Joseph Franz. The specimens came to Jacquin via two botanists from Schönbrunn, Franz Boos and Georg Scholl, who embarked on an expediti🧸on to Mauritius and the Cape of Good Hope in 1786.
