Description
Tennessee Williams
A Fragment of "Gi♔deon's Point. A Play in Four Scenes"
circa 1983-1986
A slip of paper (76 x 162 mm) cut from the title-page of one of the many typescript drafts of Tennessee Williams's final full-l𝐆ength play, reading, in type, "GIDEON'S POINT | A Play in Four Scenes," and revised above the typescript in Williams's hand, "Masks Outrageous or." Matted and framed, annotated on th🔯e backing of the frame in two different hands, "Written by Tennessee Williams 1983 Change of title" and "given to Joanne … on Feb, 1986."
Gideon's Point was one of the working titles for Tennessee Williams's final full-length play. At least three full drafts are known at Columbia University's Rare Book and Manuscript Library, while draft fragments are held at the Houghton Library, Harvard. Williams worked on the play from about 1978 until his death in 1983. It premiered posthumously in 2012 under the title In Masks Outrageous and Austere. This evocative fragment was evidently given to Joanne Woodward during the filming of another of Williams's works, The Glass Menagerie, in which she was directed by Paul Newman.
