The Mammoth, a type of ice age (Pleisctocene Epoch) elephant, co-existed with modern humans during the Upper Palaeolithic period, in Europe and Africa some 30,000 years ago, until their extinction 11,000 years ago. Early discoveries of woolly mammoth remains, were studied by Hans Sloane in 1728, these consisted of fossilised teeth and tusks from Siberia. Teeth/molars such as these were important to understand the history of the evolutionary relationship of the Mammoth and the modern Elephant we know today.
