Diplomystus dentatus, Mioplosus labracoides, Priscacara liops/Cockerellites liops, Knightia eocaena
Early Eocene (approx. 50 million years ago)
Green River Formation, Lincoln Co., Wyoming
Each panel measures 59 x 24 x 3 inches (149.9 x 61 x 7.62 cm); Largest fish (Diplomystus dentatus) measures 19 x 8½ inches (48.3 x 2✱1.6 cm). Each𝔍 panel weighs 150 pounds (68 kg) for a combined weight of 450 pounds (204.1 kg).
Approximately 50 million years ago, the Green River Formation comprised an area of more than 25,000 square miles (65,000 sq. km) of interconnected subtropical laꦆkes spread across the current states of Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado. Today, the region of the Green River Formation known as "Fossil Lake" boasts some of the most abundant and well-preserved freshwater fossils anywhere in the world.
Highlights of this three panel fossil mural include two large and wonderfully preserved examples of the large surface-feeder Diplomystus dentatus, characterized by its distinctive upturned mouth bristling with teeth; their contemporary, the temperate bass species Priscacara liops/Cockerellites liops; as well as an array of Knightia eocaena upon which both Diplomystus dentatus and the voracious Mioplosus labracoides would have predated.
This 🌄multi-fish mural on natural rock matrix captur🌞es a snapshot in time of an ancient North American ecosystem.
