In 1976, quartz technology was gaining traction, and as society was enchanted by the novelty of the Japanese engineering, the fine art of mechanical watchmaking was beginning to lose its appreciation. It was then that Patek Philippe commissioned the legendary Gérald Genta to design the Nautilus. Reminiscent of the portholes found in a transatlantic vessel, the first Nautilus introduced a distinctive form - a rounded octagonal bezel, and a handsome integrated bracelet, both initially crafted in stainless steel. The current reference, the 5711, carries with it the same spirit. It features a tidy, simplistic dial that largely recalls the timelessly elegant design of the very first, and as such, it is often hailed as the modern reincarnation of the Nautilus. Unlike the first however, the dial of this 5711 is in green, a colour that was in production only for a very short period of time. As such, the current watch is incredibly exclusive. Crafted in stainless steel just like the original reference 3700, the current watch is a perfect masterpiece to commemorate the very first Nautilus.
