This painting, created in September 1956, was exhibited at the Shanghai Art Museum in October of the same year. It received a second prize alongs🔯ide works by Wu Hufan, He Tianjian, and Liu Haisu.
Published versions of this work have always used the original black and white photo. It was not until 1990, when it was offered in Hong Kong, th꧟at slight differences were noticed. Additional branches with blossoms extends and bifurcates in the upper right corner and in the centre. Regarding this discrepancy, Tao Weiyan, the artist's son, explained that "the two additional branches were added by his father after the exhibition". With this embellishment, the painting becomes even more vibrant and lively, perfectly capturing the festive atmosphere.

本幅寫於一九五六年九月,參展於是年十月在上海⛎美術館舉辦的〈上海第一屆美術展覽會〉,與吳湖帆、賀天健、劉海粟的作品同獲二等獎。據當年為本幅所攝之🧔黑白圖片,照片背面寫有「朝花圖(早晨的陽光中老梅樹萬花齊開)陶冷月作(為國慶節而畫的)」,故又謂「朝花圖」。
本幅屢經著錄,有關畫家之文章多有述及,惟刊登者皆選用當年拍攝之黑白照片,直至一九九○年於香港釋出時,作品與老照片稍異,只見畫面右上方見幼幹橫伸,呈分叉狀,而中央繁蕊🐬密聚處,細枝斜垂,幾觸及畫家題款,就此歧異處,請教於畫家兒子陶為衍先生。他細述此畫之來源,並謂「添加的二支是先父的筆跡,應該是拍照展出後所添」。經此添綴增色,畫面更顯萬玉綻發,倍加熱鬧,配合題旨之節日氣氛!
