The fashion of “antique revival” began in the Song dynasty, and continued to be popular during the Ming dynasty, which encouraged the production of personal ornaments in ancient styles. This type of hair ornaments took the form of the ancient court headdress, and were made for male adults to secure the topknot of their hair. Headdresses of this type were made of various materials. The number of the ribs on the headdress reveals the social status of the owner. The present lot was carved with seven ribs, which indicates the headdress was worn by a prince.
