The present pieces were part of a group of forty-seven sold at Sotheby’s in November 1976, the property of Mrs Gouverneur Morris Phelps, a descendant of the Hone family. The service was made probably for John Hone II of New York who was born in 1796, or perhaps his father, John Hone, born in 1764. For a discussion of the Hone family and this service see David Sanctuary Howard, New York and the China Trade, Frenchtown🥃, 1984, p. 116, no. C75, where the prese💧nt well-and-tree platter and mazarine are illustrated.
