Robert Linzeler (1872-1941) was the grandson of Eugène Linzeler, the goldsmith and sculptor who had founded his epo🐼nymous business in Paris in 1840. Robert set up his own business and in 1897 bought the business of Jules Piault, the renowned silversmith and cutler, from Piault’s successors Leroy & Co. Piault had been gold and silversmith to Napoleon III, and Linzeler built on this foundation to ensure the finest quality goods while also expanding the firms offering. When Linzeler registered his mark, he kept the crown mark of Piault but substituted his own initials within the punch. He exhibited at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris where he was awarded a gold medal. Linzeler established a partnership with the Russian jeweler Marchak in 1922. They exhibited at the 1925 Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, where they won the Grand Prix. Linzeler also became a supplier for important retailers such as Cartier, which eventually bought the business from him shortly before the outbreak of World War II.
