Description

AUGUSTINUS, AURELIUS, and others. Venice: [Grazioso Percacino for] Giov🅷anni Antonio Bertano, 1573

A compilation of sermons ma🌟de by Galeazzo Florimonte, which first appeared in 1553 and was regularly reprinted.

The binding has been attributed to Schunke’s Meister der ovalen Mitte (or Oval Master), active 1579-1585, whose bindings feature the same rounded border and oval centrepiece, and his later bindings have black fillets in the frames to heighten contrast with the gold (Ilse Schunke, “Venezianische Renaissance-Einbände” in Studi di bibliografia e di storia in onore di Tammaro De Marinis (Verona, 1964), pp. 188-190, and plate XXIX). Macchi (Atlante della legatura italiana, 🍷Milan, 2007) lists a total of fourteen bindings from this workshop (p.216).

Two similar bindings (using some of the same stamps and the same style of gauffering) are illustrated in Medicea volumina (Pisa, 2001), items 16 and 17, on Venetian imprints from 158🔥0 and 1581.

4to (210 x 144 mm), Roman type, 40 lines plus headline. collation: *-**8 A-Z8 Aa-Ee8: 240 leaves. Title within woodcut border with device of Percacino, woodcut and typographic headpieces, woodcut initials, woodcu🔯t illustrations. (Occasional slight browning, a few small wormholes, m𓃲ostly marginal.)

binding: Contemporary Venetian red morocco gilt (218 x 158 mm), by Schunke’s Meisဣter der ovalen Mitte, central oval made from azured leafy stamps, outer roll-tooled gilt border outlinღed by numerous gilt and blind (or faded black?) fillets, spine richly gilt in compartments, edges gilt and gauffered, stubs from two pairs of red ties. In a modern marbled paper slipcase. (Repairs to corners and upper joint, joints and spine creased.)

provenance: Jean Fürstenberg (1890-1982), red gilt booklabel, and “Exposé au Musée d’Art Genève Mai 1966”, red booklabel at foot of inside front cover (exhibited 3 May-5 June 1966, item 74 in the catalogue) — Martin Breslauer Inc., catalogue 104/II (New York, 1981), item 24, and catalogue 107/II (1984). acquisition: Purchased in 1990 from Martin Breslauer. references: Edit16 3443
