Description

Length 24 cm, 9½ in.

Lempertz, Cologne, 2000s.

Whilst peach incense🍸 burners are usually made from separately cast pieces such as fruit, branches and legs, and then assembled into one object, the current example is almost certainly made from a lost wax process, cast as one unit. It is therefore unique as the original form is destroyed in the casting process. This was a process already known to Chinese artisans more than two thousand years ago. The body of the inc𓄧ense burner is hollow, the incense emerging through the open work lid. The present example is one of only two integrally cast bronze peach censers that Hausmann encountered in his time as a collector. The other having been sold in Hausmann’s 2014 Sotheby’s sale, 8th October 2014, lot 3400.
