The present PH 5 floor lamp is a unique prototype and was produced as a custom design in 1960, but never serialized, making it particularly rare and important within the PH 5 family. In an effort for his lighting to reduce glare, Poul Henningsen designed what he called the “ultimate lamp” in 1958, the PH 5 hanging light. The design of the PH 5 consists of four reflecting shades plus two small colored shades, all of which were made using aluminum. The upper shade diameter was 50 cm, giving it its name. With PH 5, Poul Henningsen wished to improve the light source’s color reproduction properties. He did so by inserting smaller red and blue shades to an existing PH structure to add extra color in that part of the spectrum where the eye is least sensitive, thus weakening the light in the middle of the spectrum where the eye is most sensitive. The PH5 was specifically designed to hang low above a taඣble while simultaneously emitting a wider array of light. During the 1960s and 1970s, the pendant version of this form was installed in numerous public places like schools, town halls, museums, as well as in many private homes. To this day, the PH 5 pendant is one of Henningsen’s most popular and best-known lamps in Denmark. A PH 5 table lamp was designed in 1958 and based on the finalized design for this model on a tripod base, the present floor lamp was created. The table lamp remained in catalog until the 1980s, when it was discontinued.
