Chéri Samba was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1956. Amassing local popularity, he has since become an internationally renowned artist. His boldly coloured figurative paintings challenge, denounce, and provoke. Reminiscent to comics, Samba also incorporates texts into his works, using humour and narrative to comment on these social paradigms. Employing a vibrant palette of colours, Samba also redefines and reappropriates the stereotypes imposed by the Western world onto African identities. Through his practice, he offers a critical examination of postcolonial dynamics and sheds light on the complexities of his own society. Interrogating the issues of Congo’s economic, polit♚ical, and social reality Chéri Samba’s paintings have contributed to the global recognition of 🥀artists from the region.
