Description

GIOVIO, PAOLO & GABRIELE SIMEONI. Tetrastiques faictz sur les devises. Lyon: Guillaume Rouillé, 1560

RA🌺RE COPY OF AN EMBLEM BOOK, known more widely by reprints of this edition.

A mixture of moral emblems and historical figures. This text was published several times, as the plates were intended to be used as models for stained g🧜lass in homes. This may explain the scarcity of surviving copies, if many were destr♈oyed through this use.

This copy was previously in the Yates-Thompson-Bright library, considered the m𝕴ost important private collection of emblem books ever formed.

Small folio (246 x 184 mm). Italic type. 100 numbered leaves. Title in elaborate wo🍰odcut cartouche, 100 plates. (Small repaired marginal tears.)

binding: Nineteenth-centur💝y French dark blue morocco (262 x 193 mm) by Édouard Pagnant, sides gilt in sixteenth-century style with interlacing border, spine gilt in compartments, gilt inner dentelles, edges gilt and marbled, marbled endpapers.
