Description

Pollini, Girolamo. Rome: Guglielmo Facciotti for Giovanni Angelo Ruffinellꦑi, 1594

With the Aldine anchor and dolphin on the title-page. Giovanni Angelo Ruffine﷽lli’s uncle, Giacomo, hadꦰ been associated with Aldo’s “Compagnia dei Librai” and upon its dissolution is supposed to have acquired the shop’s materials and the right to use the Aldine device. This seems to be the actual block used by Paolo and Aldo the Younger. Edit16 records prior use of the block (U240; CNCM 1240) by Paolo Manuzio (1562-1566) and Aldo II (1571-1575), then by Giovanni Angelo Ruffinelli (1594-1598).

The text is not a translation, but based largely on Nicholas Sander's De origine ac progressu schismatis Anglicani, first printed in 1585 (Allison & Rogers, Printed literature of the English Counter-Reformation, I, nos. 990-992).

One work in two volumes, 4to (213 x 145 mm). Italic and Roman type, 42 lines plus headline. collation: a8 b4 A-Z8 Aa-Yy8 Aaa-Ccc8 Ddd-Ggg4 (lacking Ggg4): 435 (of 436) leaves). Woodcut Aldine device on title-page, woodcut initials and headpieces. (Title of Vol. I reattached, worming to✱ inner margin, some of which repaired, foxing, scattered staining including dampstaining, browning, marginal chips and repairs, closed marginal tears, some leaves trimmed short.)

binding: Seventeenth-century vellum over stiff pasteboards (220 x 155 mm), manuscript title 🐻to spines, edges stained blue. (Some soiling, worming, a few leaves nearly detached due to worming at inner margin🦹.)
