Opaque water-based pigments with gold on paper.
Yellow text panel at top left blank.
Black inner margin with wide red outer borders.

An illustrated folio from a ragamala series from Kotah depicting Malkos Raga: a seated lord and his lady leaning against a large bolster on carpets within the complex architectural setting of a pavilion, sharing a paan. The many domes and turrets of the palace meticulously depicted. They are attended by a handmaiden who arranges a curtain over their bedchamber to the left. A closely related painting of Malkos Raga was sold at Christies New York, 28th September𝓀 2022, lot 76. Other folios from 17th and 18th century Ragamala paintings from Kotah and Bundi are dispersed in collections worldwide including the 👍Victoria and Album Museum (IS.42-1953). The San Diego Museum of Art (1990.672) and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution in
Washington D.C. (S2018.1.31).
