John Glover was the son of a Leicestershire farmer. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1795 and, in 1804, became a founding member of the Old Water-Colour Society. He was appointed President in 1807 and again in 1815, the year he won a Gold Medal at the Paris Salon, becoming the first Englishman to receive such an honour. In 1831 he emigrated to Tasm☂ania, where he continued to send pictures of local scenery back to London for exhibition.
This capriccio, elements of whi𝓰ch, such as the cypress trees, suggest that Glover had the Apennine mountains (rather than the Alps) in mind, is a fine example of his work and shows his ce⛎lebrated 'split brush technique' to great effect.
We are very gratef🦹ul to Professor David Hill for ꦛhis help when cataloguing this lot.
