Complete Slice of Gujba — A Rare and Beg🐠uiling Witnessed Fall from an Uncommon Locale

Carbonaceous chondrite – CBa (Bencubbinite)

Yobe, Nigeria (11° 29' 30"N, 11° 39' 30"E)

Witnessed Fall on April 3, 1984

1🐓13 x 87 x 2 mm (4⅜ x 3⅜ x ⅛ i﷽nches). 58 grams (.13 lb).

The villagers of Bogga Dingare, Nigeria witnessed Gujba as it hurtled across the sky on April 3rd, 1984. Of the 26 Bencubbinites found on Earth, Gujba is the only one seen as it was falling to the ground. A🎶s with the other Bencubbinites, Gujba is the result of a massive collision between a metallic asteroid and a stony asteroid, creating a superheated, metal-enriched gas that then condensed on the surface of the stony asteroid to produce Gujba. A similar process created the other 25 Bencubbinites, inc🔯luding the namesake meteorite of the entire group, Bencubbinite, offered here as Lot 107.

The intertwined metallic and stony chondrules found throughout this slice are the aesthetic result of what must have been an incredibly violent collision between these two very different heavenly bodies. Gujba also contains microscopic grains of interstratif𒀰ied graphite and diamond, an important discovery for geologists as incompletely transformed graphite has yet to be found naturally on Earth.
